Dr. Michael Adams, son of photographer Ansel Adams, is a retired internist, retired Major General in the Air National Guard/USAF, and Chairman of the Board of the Ansel Adams Galleries in Yosemite and Monterey. When he is not flying, skiing, or sight seeing, he returns to Fresno and University Medical Center to volunteer as an attending physician in the Adult Clinic.
Dr. Adams received his M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. He then served a rotating internship at the Malcolm Grow Medical Center, Andrews AFB, Washington, DC, then completed the Primary Course in Aerospace Medicine at Brooks AFB, TX, and reported to the 36th Fighter Wing, Bitburg Air Base, Germany, as a Flight Surgeon.
Dr. Adams was returned to flight status as a Pilot-Physician flying the F-4D as an Aircraft Commander, combining his prior fighter-pilot career (F-86 Sabre/F-100 Super Sabre) with that of flight medicine. After completing that tour of duty, he returned to Fresno and then Valley Medical Center for his three year categorical Internal Medicine residency.
Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Adams chose to stay in Fresno in private practice. Dr. Adams continued to serve in the California Air National Guard in Fresno, as Flight Surgeon, Clinic Commander, and then the Air National Guard Assistant to the Strategic Air Command Surgeon during the 1st Gulf War.
He completed his military career and retired a Major General as Deputy Surgeon General of the USAF for Air National Guard Affairs.
Dr. Adams practiced internal medicine for 20 years in a solo practice and 5 additional years with the Northwest Medical Group. He retired in 2000 at age 67.
